Is this the Harry Potter slump?
This is Money
A huge stimulus has been banged into the system – low interest rates expanded public spending and the Bank of England’s quantitative easing. There has to be a chance that a temporary upswing will appear at some point regardless of the inevitability of an eventual and even more painful second downswing. This is known as a W-shaped recession with the real horrors on the other side of the phoney recovery but so deep would be the second dip that W does not do it justice – rather it would resemble one of those mysterious squiggly symbols that pop up in the Harry Potter stories. Forty years ago Britain’s deepseated weaknesses were obvious as was the economic disorder generated by America’s woes. But on neither side of the Atlantic was there much appetite-for facing the fact that the post-war boom was over. Instead the dollar was devalued and lax fiscal and monetary policies gave the boom one last giddy waltz that lasted until 1973 and the huge crash triggered by the energy crisis. Aside from avoiding that sort of W-shaped disaster there is a more profound reason to wish the recovery to be postponed –we may not like what we find when we get there.
