Harry Potter author JK Rowling earns 3m a week

The 43-year-old author, who was a single mother on benefits a decade ago, now has a fortune of more than £560 milion and growing. Rowling, who has sold over 375 million books, is at the centre of a multi-billion pound film and marketing industry. The mother-of-three has also managed to give birth to two children while creating the magical world of Howarts. Forbes magazine this week crowned her the world’s best paid author, noting that her £160 million income was more than the next nine best selling writers put together.

Once a single mother on welfare, Rowling can now claim best-selling billionaire status thanks to her Harry Potter franchise. The adventures of the teen magician and his Hogwarts classmates took the publishing world by storm in 1998, when Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone became a bona fide hit. In the decade since, it and the six subsequent books in the series have sold 375 million-plus copies worldwide. Over on the big screen, her Potter franchise has already generated $4. 5 billion at the worldwide box office–and she still has three more flicks to come.

When her reading skills improved my wife gave her some of the original Nancy Drew books, which are more descriptive and try to build up a sense of anticipation. “Boring,” was the verdict. My wife had to give up the first Harry Potter book because the pace of it made her dizzy. This may sound regrettable, yet it’s the new reality. You have five seconds to spark my interest. A political leader who wants to persuade me that a new proposal has merits must make every word sing. Be very careful about trying to be lyrical and do not wander all over the place.

Meyers style is breathy and superficial rather than beautiful, and the plotting, while suspenseful in some places, is often predictable. However, once you get into the book, you wont care one bit like everyone else, youll be rooting for Bella and Edwards happily ever after. The Twilight series has been touted as the next Harry Potter franchise, and in some ways the comparison is legitimate. Both series feature long books that are nevertheless engrossing to children and teens. Both feature as main characters young adults who can move effortlessly between the normal world and a more magical one. These and other similarities have been debated in media from Time magazine to thousands of Web sites and blogs dedicated to one or both series. Local bookstores like Borders in Palo Alto and Keplers in Menlo Park hosted Breaking Dawn release parties last summer that mirrored the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows bashes of a year ago.
