This is absolutely terrifying, certainly for a 43-year-old. Maybe younger kids have become immune to such horrors and witchcraft, through you know who. Certainly Merlin, with its spells and its sense of right and wrong, will appeal to the same audiences as Harry Potter does - ie just about every single person in the whole world. And why not, it looks splendid - colourful, exciting, and yes, magic. Colin Morgan is a very likable young Merlin, engaging and handsome in a dweeby kind of way, but also modern and with a certain attitude to him. A wizard needs a bit of cheekiness. There are lovely castles about the place, and even lovelier ladies looking down on the action from high-up windows, and a luvvy dragon with the voice of John Hurt who lives in an echoey cave deep underground.

North Bradley Primary School’s first Scarecrow Trail was hailed a greatsuccess, helped along in no small way by the good weather. Pupils and villagers were invited to design and create scarecrows along thetheme of storybook characters. About 450 people then went on a circuit around the village on Sunday tryingto guess which characters they all were, with prizes on offer for the mostcorrect answers. Organiser Caroline Shepherd said: “It was fantastic and really wellsupported.

In 1990, Rowling’s world was rocked whenher mother died, aged 45, after a 10-year battle with multiple sclerosis. She left the UK to teach English in Portugal where she met her firsthusband, the Portuguese journalist Jorges Arantes, but she continued to write. In 1993, Rowling gave birth to their daughter Jessica but she splitfrom her hubby soon afterwards and moved to Edinburgh to be near her sister. She initially intended to start teaching again but dropped the ideabecause she says she would never have finished the book.
