Perth and Kinross Association of Voluntary Service (PKAVS), which is making the final preparations for its Touch of Tartan charity ball on August 29, is inviting bids for the rare copy of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, worth over £500. Helen MacKinnon, PKAVS’ marketing and development co-ordinator, said yesterday: “We were really excited to receive this donation from JK Rowling and to have her support. “As the prize is so outstanding and tickets have sold out, we have decided to open up the bidding on the Harry Potter novel to anyone interested. ” The event will be held in Perth’s Salutation Hotel and will include a civic reception hosted by Perth and Kinross Council, fine dining, and Scottish melodies from the Gallivanters. Perthshire actor Andy Gray will be the celebrity auctioneer. Louise Ruff, a 13-year-old young carer from PKAVS’ Young Carers Project will also entertain guests, giving a special performance of Scottish songs. Thrilled to be taking part in the event, she said: “The nerves are creeping in now that we’re getting closer to the big day but I can’t wait… Locals and visitors to Perth flocked to see the beautiful gardens in the grounds of Murray Royal Hospital and enjoy the party atmosphere. ZAGULA Cathedral High School Last summer, when I first read this quote on the back ofStephenie Meyer’s 2005 debut novel,”Twilight,” I had to ask myself, “What was Idoing? This doesn’t sound THAT good. It’s notgoing to be half as enjoyable as Harry Potter. Andthat’s exactly what, more or less, my objective was; tofind a series that could help ease me out of my “HarryPotter mourning period. ” I know it was hypocritical after reading seven books aboutmagic and wizards, but I never really thought vampire bookswere all that great; to an extent I even felt they wereslightly peculiar. Of course, the novels in what has become Meyer’s”Twilight Saga” are the type that can ensnareanyone. They fit into so many categories the obviousscience fiction, young adult romance, adventure that manydifferent people find them entertaining reads.
