article-tools –> By Erin McWhirter, Film Writer January 11, 2008 07:55pm HARRY Potter waving his magic wand four times in the past didn’t deter Australians from flocking to the cinema to see the fifth instalment of the film franchise, making it the highest box-office earner of 2007. Grossing a huge $35 million, the wizardry magic of Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix topped the Motion Picture Distributors Association of Australia annual box office results, closely tailed by Shrek The Third which pocketed $34 million. Australian cinema-goers lapped up the year of sequel follow-ups and children-friendly flicks with The Simpsons Movie, Transformers, Happy Feet and Night At the Museum all making the top-10 grossing films of last year. While the dancing penguins of Happy Feet smashed records by grossing more than $2. 2 million when it opened on Boxing Day in 2006, overall the Oscar-winning film came in eighth, earning $21 million. Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Bourne Ultimatum and Spiderman 3, all of which are the third movies in their franchise series, also made the top 10.

substring(0, thispageresult. Based on the fifth book in the ubiquitous series by children’s author J. Rowling, Order of the Phoenix shows Harry’s internal struggles from an encounter with Lord Voldemort, as well as his difficulties with the Ministry of Magic. After his new Defense Against the Dark Arts teacher (impeccably played by Imelda Staunton) fails to teach the class in usable technique, Harry mounts a secret class of his own. Both Pullman and J. Rowling, the author of the Harry Potter fantasy saga, donât quite agree with the Narnia approach. In his Christianity Today interview, Pullman said that he detests âThe Chronicles of Narniaâ and that the âHis Dark Materialsâ trilogy offers alternative answers to the âbig questionsâ raised in both his and Lewisâs books. Questions, he said, such as âis there a God?â and âwhat must I do to be good?âRowling also believes there is nothing wrong with puberty and the changes it brings. âThere comes a point where Susan, who was the older girl, is lost to Narnia because she becomes interested in lipstick. Sheâs become irreligious basically because she found sex…
In her own rise to success, Rowling has had to deny claims that her novels are tools for manipulating children. Cohen, who is set to teach a course called âReligion and Magic: An exploration of the Harry Potter books,â said many believe Rowling has hidden Christian and even Wiccan subtexts in her writing. It is these Christian activists that have banned Harry Potter books from many school reading lists around the world, she said. The books have even been destroyed in burning protests. Secrist said such acts are âextremeâ and do âno good either. âUltimately, these religious protestors are only âsmall pockets of people,â said Richard Callahan, assistant professor of religious studies at MU. His area of expertise is religion in America.
