The fuss about Albus
Times of India - Oct 28, 2007
Not only was he the most beloved elder statesman, hewas also the kindest and smartest, someone who had answers for everything and agreat sense of humour to boot. He was an endearingly eccentric headmaster. Hewas also Harry Potterâs guide and mentor and the orphanâs only linkto his parents killed byVoldemort. For many Potterlovers, Dumbledoreâs disinterest in women was normalâhe seemed tohave devoted his energies to maintain order among the various warring factionsin the wizard world. The love that one associated with him was a deep humanlove, of which he was the biggest expounder. He repeatedly tells Harry that thechink in his nemesis Voldemortâs armour is his inability to believe in thepower of love. Did Rowling leave a trail? Perhaps the only pointer for thediscerning reader came when Dumbledore says of his best friend-turned-enemy (andnow secret lover, Gellert Grindelwald), âYou cannot imagine how his ideascaught me, Harry, inflamedme…
âMy ten-year-old daughter was curious andasked me why Rowling had said that Dumbledore is gay,â says Shalini Vyas,a parent in Mumbai. âI just told her they are different from normalpeople. I wonât encourage her to read Harry Potter any more. I mightconfiscate all her Potter books. There are millions of other books that she canread. â Adult readers areinclined to be more laidback. Actress Minissha Lamba, a big Potter fan, says,âChildren today know more about such things than we give them credit for.

The situation of Harry Potter reminded me a lot of Pip from ‘Great Expectations. ‘ I saw them as deeper, more creaky, more corroded, but they were textured very differently when the first two movies came out. They were so bright and happy and full of light, that I wasn’t interested.
