Harry Potter First Edition Auctioned
San Francisco Chronicle - Oct 26, 2007
tmpl –>(10-26) 08:26 PDT LONDON, United Kingdom (AP) — A copy of J. Rowling’s first Harry Potter novel sold at auction Thursday for almost $41,000. The copy of the hardback first edition of “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone,” published in 1997 and signed “Joanne Rowling” on the back of the title page, was sold to an anonymous private bidder for $40,326 at Christie’s auction house. At a London auction in May, a copy of “Philosopher’s Stone” inscribed with a personal dedication to the owner sold for more than $55,000, including buyer’s premium. The book was published by Bloomsbury PLC with an initial print run of about 500 copies. Many were purchased by libraries, making copies in good condition extremely rare.

Final Potter book reaches France
BBC News - Oct 26, 2007
The Virgin store on the Champs Elysee, in Paris, stayed open until 0130 for the launch, encouraging fans to dress up as characters from the Harry Potter books. In Switzerland, the first French copies were delivered by post because authorities refused to ease restrictions on shop opening hours so that stores could stage a midnight launch. The book’s German language version, Harry Potter und die Heiligtuemer des Todes, will go on sale just after midnight on Saturday. Publishers Carlsen have printed three million copies - one million more than for the launch of the previous book. The Potter books have been translated into 64 languages in all with more than 350 million copies sold.

“I will make sure that no stranger ever writes Harry Potter books,” the bestselling author told German newspapers sold on the streets by the homeless. “Harry Potter is mine,” the 42-year-old said in an interview coinciding with the launch of the German version of the seventh and final book in the series Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. “I’m the only one who understands him,” she said, adding it was a mistake to think that any half-way talented author could write a sequel to a famous work. Rowling admitted that it had not been easy writing the final Harry Potter book.
