Under the direction of Thea Sharrock, the hugely challenging role of Strang is taken by 17-year-old Daniel Radcliffe, about to make his fifth appearance as Harry Potter later this year, and whose naked torso displayed on posters for Equus is already setting teenage hearts aflutter. Dysart is played by Richard Griffiths, fresh from two award-winning years on stage and screen as Hector in Alan Bennett’s The History Boys, but better known to Potter fans as Uncle Vernon. Jenny Agutter played Strang’s unfortunate girlfriend in the 1977 film version of Equus, and in this production, intriguingly, she portrays the judge who places him in Dysart’s care. The strongest collective memory of those who saw the play is of the horses played by actors. Will Kemp, star of Matthew Bourne’s Swan Lake, Play Without Words and The Car Man, is the principal horse, Nugget.
