Sherlock Holmes and The Baker Street Irregulars: The Fall of the…

The book is probably unlike any you have read before, which is part of the fun. Yes, it’s written in English, but the slang of England in 1889 is very different from the slang of the United States in 2006. Not to fret: A glossary in the back will help you figure out what a “layabout” is and whether someone is “barmy. ” Of course, fans of Harry Potter already know what a “git” is.

But comedies do tend to have lower physical production costs, since they often don’t require extravagant sets or expensive postproduction work. And if they have low artistic production costs as well (for the cast and directors), they have a kind of jackpot potential that dramas, at least in recent years, have lacked. In other words, even when a comedy doesn’t produce the huge revenues of a blockbuster like “Harry Potter,” it can help push the returns of a portfolio way up if it is put together in a way similar to “Little Miss Sunshine” or “The 40-Year-Old Virgin,” which starred an inexpensive and untested. Such a film will pay off in the theater, on DVD, in television sales – and ultimately contribute to the studio’s catalog.

But by the time I was 14, it would have taken a couple more trips to the produce mart. So when a friend recently reminded me about the pencil test, I looked around my room for a more challenging test object, given the dimensions of a pencil vis-a-vis the dimensions of me. One at a time, I passed the tests of: a bottle of vitamins, an unopened can of soda, a light bulb, the board game Boggle (in its box), a high-heeled shoe, a one-pound box of Wheat Chex, a set of "Veronica Mars" DVDs, an apple, an 18-ounce can of Lysol and Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban , hardcover (448 pages). It was a fun afternoon, a great moment for me and my breasts, working together toward a common goal. We don’t always get along so well. I’d been thinking evil things about them because of a shock I’d recently had. My housemate Christina noticed that my bra wasn’t fitting (yes, a house full of college women is pretty much exactly as you picture it).

“He did the posters for ‘Star Wars’ and ‘Back to the Future. ‘ ” He pushed open a heavy door, thick as a bank vault, and swept his hand in front of him like a game-show supermodel to indicate the original artwork for the poster of “Torrente 3. ” Sure enough, in the fish-eye perspective of Torrente’s gut and the fiery amber colors of the explosions in the background, you can see the same hand that painted the poster art for “Raiders of the Lost Ark” and “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone. “Segura crossed his arms over his chest, luxuriating in the covert pleasure of seeing his Torrente directly linked to Indiana Jones. “For me,” Segura said, “I’m done. “Four years ago, Segura almost became the next Roberto Benigni. He received a call from a producer named Fernando Sulichin.

There may also be many readers for whom Aza’s struggle is engaging on its own terms. And the fantasy world of “Fairest” is vivid enough to sweep the action satisfyingly along – especially in the land of the gnomes, an underground world of caverns, where everything seems more comfortable and alive, and Aza is paid in diamonds for her singing. Do read “Fairest” – or give it to your favorite teenager – if only because you or she loves “Harry Potter” and is restless for a bit more dragon-scale soap while the final installment of the series is in the making. But you will probably enjoy it only if you are not easily irritated by passivity. Levine is a writer of many talents; perhaps her next heroine will have a bolder view of herself and her place in the world.

I can just picture the scenario on Sunday. Mom, what are you doing with my Harry Potter book?

Personally, I prefer the British version for the test. I can just picture the scenario on Sunday. Mom, what are you doing with my Harry Potter book?
