In the first-quarter, Scholastic executed on its plan and made solid progress toward achieving its goals for fiscal 2007. Scholastic Education in its most important quarter of the year continued to experience strong growth in educational technology sales. And Children’s Books, non-Harry Potter trade sales were up; Clubs and Fairs implemented their plans for the new school year; and Continuity sales gained significantly though increases in bad debt reduced profitability somewhat. We also continued to move forward on our overhead cost reduction plan which we announced last spring and are on a target to reach our savings goals for the year. In the first-quarter, Scholastic Education operating profit and margins rose significantly as we experienced continued strong demand from schools for research based proven technology that raises student achievement. Building on momentum from last year’s release of READ 180 Enterprise Edition and enhanced service and technical support capabilities, READ 180 sales grew over 10%, exceeding $50 million in the quarter. With proven results validated and documented in the over 100 districts, READ 180 continues to be the market leader in reading intervention… Children’s books had a strong quarter in a number of areas. As anticipated, however, results were lower than last year when we had record-setting sales in Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. In trade, sales of non-Harry Potter titles were up driven by strong new releases including the eighth title in Dav Pilkey’s Captain Underpants series, which debuted at number two on the USA Today bestseller list and drove the series to number one on the New York Times children’s series bestseller list. Trade also has a very exciting upcoming fall front list including Maurice Sendak’s first pop-up book,.

He’s roused out of his slumber, however, when Julian gets in contact, offering him money if he’ll help her with a secret that could change the world – and him. Mexican director Alfonso Cuar? career has been nothing if not varied. He’s jumped from ‘Great Expectations’ to ‘Y Tu Mam?ambi? to ‘Harry Potter’ and now this, his best film to date and one which warrants repeated viewing and plenty of soul-searching. It’s too good and important a film to reveal too much of the plot; it does have some holes, but the feeling you get watching it is a mix of exhilaration and terror. Combining thriller conventions with social and political commentary, Cuar?oesn’t hold back in his depiction of a Britain falling over the brink, but what makes the film so compelling is that the viewer can trace a line from events today to what they’re seeing on screen. The vision of a not-too-distant future presented here is brilliantly realised – so much so that it compensates for the areas of the storyline that needed further development and explanation. Cuar?nd his cast also deserve a lot of credit for making sure that all the performances are suitably underplayed so as not to take attention away from the bigger issues.

Holmes Morton, with his Harry Potter glasses and walrus mustache, has helped find the altered genes that cause a dozen rare disorders through studies of the traditional Amish and Mennonite communities of Lancaster County, Pa. At the same time, the country doctor has developed methods for treating or preventing some of these devastating illnesses in the children who ride up to his clapboard clinic in horse-drawn buggies. He has also struggled, meanwhile, to provide treatment at prices that his patients can afford. This week, Morton, a high school dropout from West Virginia who wound up graduating from Harvard Medical School, was one of 25 recipients of a $500,000 MacArthur Foundation fellowship. The unrestricted grants are awarded each year to innovators in a variety of fields, including science, medicine and the arts.
