ROWLING has probably lost count of the number of prizes she has won but her boy wizard worked his magic once more at last night’s British Book Awards. Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince was chosen as the W H Smith Book of the Year. Previous recipients have included Dan Brown’s bestselling thriller The Da Vinci Code. Rowling whose 300 million book sales have made her a multimillionaire said: “I’m delighted that Harry Potter continues to give so much pleasure to adults and children and I’m honoured to receive this award. I’m enjoying writing the last book in the series and it’s coming along nicely. ” She was congratulated by Lauren Bacall who was at the ceremony to present another prize.

The “Harry Potter” and “Chronicles of Narnia” franchises have made superstars out of formerly no-name child actors like Daniel Radcliffe and soon “The Spiderwick Chronicles” may follow their lead. A huge casting search has begun for Jared and Simon the twin stars of the bestselling “Spiderwick” books to begin their big-screen adaptations in a few months. “We really are looking for an unknown pair of kids” director Mark Waters (”Mean Girls”) said in a statement commencing his search. “The Web site has all the information you need to make your tape and mail it to us. You never know — you might just be what we’re looking for.
