com could make sense since the firm’s Warner Brothers movie studio has been IMAX’s most significant Hollywood partner. “People have speculated that Time Warner is one of the more interested companies looking at IMAX since a lot of their movies have gone through the IMAX pipeline” said Kelman. Last year Time Warner released high profile films “Batman Begins” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory” and “Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire” simultaneously for IMAX screens and standard movie theaters.

Only 20% of promotions are advertised in advertising magazines or large posters positioned outside the store. The other 80% are only seen if a customer comes into the store. It is the day before the launch of the latest Harry Potter blockbuster. To maximise sales the release is a Bank Holiday weekend. ‘Big Retailer’ learns late in the day that its competitor has advertised the books at 1. 99 [pounds sterling] less than ‘Big Retailer’. The retailer changes its price to match but it is too late for advertising on TV or leaflets so they arrange new POS giving the revised pricing… Problem solved? It is Saturday. Shoppers make their way to the book department. As they reach the display of Harry Potter blockbusters there is no special pricing or promotion signage. The savvy shoppers have been watching prices and know that ‘The Other Retailer’s’ price has been reduced. Problems at ‘Big Retailer’ mean the new POS is not in store so they are unaware that the price has been dropped. As a result the books are passed over. Offers are used to attract business and wisdom dictates that this scenario is part of being a competitive retailer as it is not possible to predict the future.

Microsoft steals march on rivals
Australian IT – Mar 22, 2006
But the Xbox 360 will be the first of the new machines to land giving Microsoft an edge. Australian retailers already had between 35000 and 40000 Xbox 360s on pre-orders worth between $30 million and $40 million Mr McLean said. That makes it the biggest-ever launch of an entertainment device in local history beating the first-day box-office receipts for all of the Harry Potter films. A long line of retailers including Harvey Norman JB Hi-Fi and global games retailer Electronics Boutique as well as mass market chains like Target and K-Mart will be selling the units. Microsoft also has big hopes for its Xbox Live service which allows gamers to play online – for a fee. Online gaming which has been touted for some years as the “next big thing” in the sector is yet to pick up in Australia. Xbox only has 30000 local users while Telstra has 200000 users on the live gaming part of its Big Pond portal.
